Ropes, twines and netting materials

Materials

Two nets can look alike and last very differently. We choose the polymer, twine diameter and mesh for the environment, then braid and inspect them in our own plant.

ICHOU netting is made principally from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyester (Tetoron, PET) and nylon. HDPE resists weather and seawater and drains well, which suits long-term outdoor and marine use; polyester is strong with low elongation, so it is the usual choice for permanent fall-arrest netting; nylon offers toughness and good energy absorption.

Mesh size, twine diameter, colour and construction (knotted or knotless) are all made to order. Safety netting can additionally be produced to the Taiwanese national standard CNS 16079.

Five series

Bird netting
HDPE, chosen for weather resistance, drainage and being environmentally sound. Mesh is selected for the target species; the netting is non-lethal.
Sports netting
Balances impact resistance, durability and appearance. HDPE is recommended outdoors for its drainage; mesh and colour are specified per sport.
Safety netting
Designed to CNS requirements and to the site. Temporary construction netting is usually HDPE; permanent fall-arrest netting is usually polyester (Tetoron).
Marine netting
Seawater- and weather-resistant with good drainage; mesh and construction follow the target species, vessel size and working method.
Flame-retardant netting
For safety-critical and special environments — Class 1 flame retardancy with halogen-free retardants. Full specification below.

Safety netting essentials (CNS 14252)

CNS 14252 safety netting summary diagram
Safety netting at a glance: types, components and the numbers that matter.
Three types
Horizontal safety net (slung flat to catch falling people and larger objects); vertical safety net (hung upright to stop people or objects falling outwards); fine-mesh vertical net (a finer mesh that also holds back small debris and splashes).
Main components
Mesh, cover net, netting cord, knots, border rope and tie rope. The cord is the basic material; the knots govern stability and how load is carried; the border rope reinforces the edge and secures the cover net; the tie ropes fix the net to the structure on site.
Key figures
Safety net mesh: 10 cm or less on any side. Cover net mesh: 2 cm or less on any side. Net tensile strength: 132.7 kgf or more.
Four things to check when buying
The purpose (arresting people, catching objects, or both); the mesh required (fall protection and small-debris protection differ); the load capacity (not just price — tensile strength and tie-rope arrangement matter); and the rigging method (fixing points, spacing and the site structure count for as much as the net).

Flame-retardant fall-arrest netting: full specification

Much better weather resistance
A new synthetic polymer fibre with stronger UV and weather resistance. Under prolonged sun, rain and temperature swings it keeps its elasticity and structural stability, significantly extending service life.
Top-grade flame retardancy
Certified to CNS 10285 L3196-1995 A-4 Class 1, with a Limiting Oxygen Index of 32% or above. Ambient air is about 21% oxygen, so an LOI above 32% means the netting is unlikely to sustain combustion in normal conditions.
Excellent drainage
The structure is engineered to drain efficiently, preventing water pooling and the loads that come with it.
High tensile and impact strength
High-tenacity yarn gives the tensile and impact performance needed to catch falling people and objects.
Halogen-free retardants
Halogen-free throughout, so no corrosive or highly toxic gases are released in a fire — lowering health and environmental risk on site.

Where it is used

  • Facade protection on construction sites
  • Safety netting for work at height
  • Fall protection for temporary working platforms
  • Sites with flame-retardancy and safety-compliance requirements
